Later on in the war the Nazis used trains to take Jewish people to the concentration camps. If trains were not available they would use trucks or make them walk. When the Jews were in the railway cars they were not given food or water, sometimes for days. They had to use the bathroom in the cars right where they were standing, and they were so jammed pack that they could barely move. Some of the prisoners died before they even made it to the concentration camps. This was due to the lack of food and water and the extremes of the weather. The railway cars were freezing in the winter and extremely hot in the summer. They used both cattle cars and passenger cars. People were crammed together so they could fit as many people as possible. On January 20, 1942 the Nazi party met to discuss the means of transportation of more than 11 million Jews to killing centers. In the early part of the war when they first started to kill people they were transported to the camps by train, then put in trucks and taken to the mass grave sites. On the way there the trucks would have the exhaust system set up so the carbon monoxide would go to the back of the truck. After a while everyone would die from a lack of oxygen.
